Part 1
Erika ran through the narrow, dirt halls, heart pounding. Only one more corner, she told herself. This was what she always did to keep herself going, although the exit was far from near.
Her light brown hair was probably a tangled mess, but she didn’t care. She needed to escape.
Erika could hear footsteps quickly running after her. Her racing heartbeat quickened.
They had found her.
Erika felt like collapsing. Her knees shook from both fear and exhaustion. Her lungs felt ready to burst. She didn’t know if she would be able to outrun her pursuers in this state.
She was the only one left, and the Destroyers wouldn’t stop until they hunted her down. Again. She was lucky she escaped her cell when she did.
One more day…Erika tried to shake the thought, and turned yet another corner. Except this one was different.
Five Destroyers were standing in front of her, blocking the hallway. Their navy blue uniforms and metal badges made it pretty obvious. But what was truly terrifying was the huge guns and metal instrustruments they carried. The things that were made specifically for Erika and her kind.
Erika spread her arms out, hoping that it would work, but there was only a soft glow. She was too exhausted. One of the Destroyers stepped forwards.
“Erika Wren, you are under arrest.” He said, holding his instrument–mainly known as a sapper–in front of him. Erika stood there, frozen. The Destroyers grinned, glad by her reaction. But Erika was really looking at the small patch of sunlight next to him. If she looked above him she would give it away. Erika would have to trust that it was an exit.
“Would you like to give yourself up without a fight?” The destroyers questioned. Erika looked at him and nodded slowly, careful to keep the scared expression.
“Yes.” She croaked, surprised by how raspy her voice sounded. As the Destroyers moved towards Erika, she kicked one in the legs and sprinted past him. Then she did the craziest thing she had ever done.
Kicking the destroyers one more time, making him fall to the ground, Erika jumped on his back and jumped for the other Destroyers with the sapper. He grunted, surprised, and tried to shake her off, but with no success.
Erika looked above her. Sure enough, there it was. Her exit. Taking a deep breath, she jumped for it, and when it was obvious she wouldn’t make it, Erika forced all her energy into a simple spell.
She flew five feet higher than she would have, through the opening. Erika took long, deep breaths, listening to the yelling of the Destroyers. Then, using the very last of her strength, she moved a large rock on top of the hole to make sure no destroyers followed.
Erika fell to the ground, unconscious.
But she wasn’t aware of the figure walking towards her.
To be continued…
